Adult patients undergoing orthodontic falls into two groups. One group of patients require orthodontic treatment as part of or as an adjunct to other dental procedures. Orthodontic treatment is not a primary concern of the patient. They require an interdisciplinary treatment approach involving orthodontic interaction with other specialities . Another group seek orthodontic treatment as a primary concern to improve function and aesthetics. This group of patients requires comprehensive orthodontic treatment. They may or may not require interdisciplinary treatment involving other specialities-depending on the presenting condition of the patient.

The following sequence can be followed in the management of adult orthodontic patients. Management of emergencies like pain relief should be done before any other procedures. Then steps to control any active dental disease like caries or periodontal disease should be done. Oral hygiene maintenance and periodontal maintenance therapy should be taken care of during orthodontic treatment also. Retention should be given immediately after removal of the fixed appliance to retain teeth in corrected positions. Permanent splinting of periodontally compromised teeth may be done.
