Orr's Descriptive Essay-The Great Swing (1970)

It was May 10th 1970, at the Boston Garden, one of the most historic events in Boston Bruins history. It was the day Orr flew. I was in the front row seated behind the net when it all went down. I remember it like the back of my hand.

The puck dropped and I felt the intensity rattle through my bones. The Bruins won the opening faceoff and started with a couple good shots on goal. The Blues gained possession of the and passed the puck around in our defensive zone. The puck was passed behind the net to Frank St. Marseille who was slammed into the boards right in front of me. I repeatedly banged my hands on the boards well screaming at the top of my lungs. The B’s took the puck and moved it up the ice where they turned the puck over. Derek Sanderson stole the puck and quickly passed it to Rick Smith who snapped the shot off. The red light flashes and the crowd roars with glee. The Bruins took a 1-0 lead. The puck dropped and the rowdy fans started to sit back down. The crowd repeatedly screamed “Let’s go Bruins”. A series of shots came from the Blues but all saved by our exceptional goaltender Gerry Cheevers. Possession changes back and forth throughout the first and the score remained 1-0. The Blues won the opening faceoff and sent the puck up to Larry Keenan Who scored 19 seconds into the period. Bruins fans streaming seating in shock as the few hundred blues fans arose from their seats in disbelief. The Blues continue to attack with the puck and Gerry Cheevers repeatedly saves all of their fantastic shots. Later on in the period John Bucyk took the puck up the ice and snapped a wrist we into the back of the net. The crowd roared with glee as the Bruins tied it up.
