Plot Summary:
On an island- there are nine children. There is a rule that keeps the island that way. “Nine on an island, orphans all, any more, the sky might fall.” This is a special place, completely cut out from the real world. There is a protective border around the island; and all the animals are friendly. There is plenty of food, water, and supplies for each child. No child knows anything about the outside world, because they think the only word there is, is the world they live in. Children arrive on a mysterious green boat. The children live on the island as usual doing daily things, like: reading books, playing outside, swimming, and drawing. Everything is normal for Jinny, until it is time for her best friend (Deen, the current elder) to leave the island. The elder is the leader of the island, and has a ‘care’ to take care of, but they also have to train the next elder. The previous weeks before Deen goes away, his mood changes often because he is maturing into an adult. Jinny did not want Deen to leave with all of her heart, so when Deen left, she was heartbroken. When an elder leaves the island, they are replaced with a care. Jinny’s new care is Ess, and the next elder (after Jinny) is Ben. Jinny trains Ben and takes care of Ess for many months. Over time, Jinny has become attached to the island and does not want to leave, so she doesn’t. What Jinny did broke the rule. The ‘care’ that came when Jinny was supposed to leave is now her responsibility, when it should be Ben’s. Jinny then pulls the green boat onto the island so nobody will ever leave again.
