When she says that being the winner is not fair and right, she is challenging the lottery itself. Why does someone have to be severely hurt or potentially die. What is the use for this tradition, and does it actually work?
5: When people read the story the first time through, they would expect money to be given to the winner. It was a happy story with an entire town trying to have fun a choose a “winner” at random. Once the reader gets to the end, they then realize what the point of the lottery is. The second time reading through the story, they will notice times where it gets a little dark/heartless. When Tessie tires to have her daughter draw with the family, it was not just all fun and games, it was so that there would be a smaller chance of her being the “winner”, and getting brutally beat or sacrificed.
