Organic Metaphors: The Sydney Opera House

Improved Essays
Historically speaking the Sydney Opera House had various organic metaphors. You got to see those shells of the building with many various metaphors. There were many different viewpoints and metaphors that people could look at architecture buildings. All of these interpretations of the building could be seen clearly. Jencks indicated that “the interpretation of architectural metaphor is more elastic and dependent on local codes than the interpretation of metaphor in spoken or written languages.” (41). Every person in the world might have an individual opinion than others. This meant that people might have different metaphors of buildings, which made it more challenging for the viewers. I agreed that people think in different ways than others

When we consider memorializing an event or person in the form of a monument, no one would imagine it being gnawed away by rats. Certain shortfalls arise when contrasting these forgotten structures and, say, the often-visited monuments of the National Mall. We must mind these qualities if we wish to prevent its fall to obscurity. Foremost, whatever cause our memorial will commemorate, it must resound in the hearts of the people.…

This week I read The Spirit Garden by Ryan Gorrie. This article was about a bent wood structure he created for the Anishnaabe people through a combination of new and old building techniques. This reading was less about the structure he created and more about the people. Gorrie felt that it was his responsibility to make these people’s vision a reality. He talks about how architecture is actually an animate object.…

It is the architect’s responsibility to design his or her building to have a significant impact on the occupants’ spatial experience. This experience goes far beyond the physical and tangible components of the design, it is metaphysical, observed, perceived. It is for example, like our favorite song, it goes much deeper than just lyrics and melodies it creates a connection between us and the feeling, experience, or memory we link that song to when we hear it. “When an architect thinks about space, he or she is thinking about a relationship, not an objective phenomenon - human space, not scientific space.” The United States Bankruptcy Courthouse is a historical building located in the Park Avenue Historic District in Tallahassee, Florida.…

Metaphor represents a relationship between two things suggested through an analogy. For example, the slogan advertised at the end of the COD: Black Ops commercial states, “There is a soldier in all of us”. The advertisers are not necessarily implying that there is an actual soldier inside of us, but rather they are implying that this video game is so much fun that everyone will become “hooked” on it once they play. “In metonymy, a relationship is suggested that is based on association, which implies the existence of codes in peoples minds that enable them to make the proper connections” (25).…

Mohammed Waseem Chiraagh 1380983 ARCH 6313 - Critical Studies 3 Major Assignment Traditionally as humans, when critiquing a building our thoughts are based on the buildings form as a whole, one defined object or boundary made up of different components which creates the overall look, structure and how it fits into the contextual surroundings. In the text “Why Architecture Matters” Paul Goldberger, shows that not only the outer boundary or façade is important but that there is another dimension which is often open to wider interpretation and often disregarded when thinking about a building. This being the interior space within these boundaries, the interior of the building says a lot more than its exterior, as it defines the space, the light and the mood it creates.…

A metaphor usually connects two unlikely things. In the Literature text, even Aristotle considered a metaphor as “an intuitive perception of the similarity in dissimilars” (530). An example of one is while Bauby emphasizes his appreciation for his daughter and father, “These two are the outer links of the chain of love that surrounds and protects me” (41). The metaphor certainly reveals that he cares about his family and cherishes the moments he has with them. This metaphor tells readers that Bauby is family oriented.…

In the late 19th century, another famous American architect — Franck Lloyd Wright, who was an employee of Sullivan’s studio, inherited Sullivan’s idea about relationship between form and function. Wright thinks that architecture should be loyal to not only structure and purpose of itself, but also time, site, and the environment. Based on the idea of organic architecture, combining his practice in “Prairie Style,” Wright had further developed Sullivan’s idea forward it to a more throughout theory of “organic architecture.” In the article “ In the Cause of Architecture” in 1908, Wright wrote, “A sense of the organic is indispensable to an architect; where can he develop it so surely as in this school? A knowledge of the relations of form and…

This building is located outside of Paris and offers a space for occupants to escape from the crowded Paris. I never intended to study architecture. When I was applying to colleges, I intended to study kinesiology and psychology. Studying dance and photography when I was younger gave me a desire to be expressive, and even though I felt a connection to the physicality of dance through kinesiology, I knew I wanted to do something that fulfilled that same sense of expression. It wasn’t until I studied architecture that I noticed some of its similarities with dance. Dance is expressive of the body, but it is also an observation of people’s interaction with each other and with their surroundings, a study of people’s movement through space.…
