Organic Grocery Labelling

Improved Essays
The need for safe and accurate labelling has becomes imminent, as non-GMO, organic and other certified food claims trend. Products with certified labelling claims continue to gain strong consumer demand. Undeniably, some of the claims found on some food labels can be misleading. Essentially every processed food item on the shelves today has Soy, Sugar beets, Corn or Canola product, yet these crops the most genetically modified crop available commercially are not identified on food labels (bout 75% - 85% of our foods are made with GMOs - Corn and beet are also used in livestock feed).
Products with food claims are booming in groceries stores. Foods products branded Non-GMO, Organic and Natural are flourishing in conventional grocery shops.

In “The Threats from Genetically Modified Foods”, Robin Mather effectively brings awareness to the American public of the harmful side effects of genetically modified (GM) foods. She shares that genetically modified foods are foods with an altered genetic make-up. This alteration has lead them to be banned in several countries. However, in the United States, GM foods are not strictly regulated and, therefore, not required to be labeled. Also, the pesticides used in genetically modified foods yield harmful side effects in animals and humans.…

But, of course, change never comes easily. Although support for GMO labeling is quite high among the public, GMO companies and advocates are still adamantly against it. Some publications argue that, rather than promoting consumer choice, GMO-labelling actually limits choice by skewing the public’s perception of GM food. This would put the produce in a negative light and would cause retailers to stop selling the products altogether. They also claim that the labeling of GMOs will raise groceries bills by as much as $400 per year.…

Food, an essential ingredient to survive; yet, one of the more complicated things to produce. In the food industry, the market creates products designed around what the consumers want and needs. Although that may sound simple, it is rather more complex than that due to consumers wanting everything from convenient, non-genetically modified organisms (GMOs), paleo, organic, clean labels, gluten free, and affordable products. Each of these categories has either been a constant desire from the consumers in the past decade, or new trends from the past few years with continual growth in demand for these products. One company that has been ahead of the trend was Annie’s Organics, which was founded in 1989.…

The aisle titles such as, “alternative milk”, “green snacks”, and “whole body” differ from your average grocery store. In these aisles you find customers diligently dissecting food labels. A Whole Foods customer cares about what they put into their body and tries to be as informated as possible. Scanning the aisles words like “non-GMO”, “grass-fed”, and “soy free” jump out at you. To an unknowing customer these words may seem like marketing gimmicks, but to the trained eye of a frequent Whole Foods customer these words provide assurance and peace of mind.…

David Kesmodel’s report shows research on stores like Walmart and Supervalu that are open this line, plan to meet the consumer demands for organic food; basically are trying to get the consumers to shop there, rather than a Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s. Thus, boosting organic store brands, will generate higher profit margins for grocers of about 15% of retail sales. Kesmodel’s shows bias against stores making profit on organic brands, when there is no essential difference in convention produce. That being said, the audience is likely made of those who agree with Kesmodel’s claim about stores making profit on organic foods is prosperous. This source provides the research of how popular the organic brands are becoming in the U.S. I found this resource linked on the National Newspaper Core report after searching for Organic vs Conventional…

To have a USDA approved label in the United States, John Cohrssen, former counsel to the white House Biotechnology Working Group, and Henry Miler, a physician and founding director of the US Food and Drug Administration Office of Biotechnology, explain it can be only on USDA authorized produces. This means that while the label means a stamp of approval having gone through government sanctioned processes and procedures, it has nothing to do with safety, nutrition and quality (Cohrssen and Miler, p 25). Their findings are similar to most reports and other academic journals, that…

For the first time in 20 years the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a new major food labeling overhaul. Food labeling and what ingredients are disclosed on labels has been a controversial topic in the United States. For Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and Diabetic patients in particular, proper food labeling has been a very important issue as foods with hidden trans fat, potassium, and sugar can raise a patient's risk of harmful side effects.
