Mechanistic or Organic Design?
“Mechanistic design means that the organization is characterized by machine-like standard rules, procedures and a clear hierarchy of authority” (Burns & Stalker, 1961). Contrast this with an organic design, which means, “that the organization is much looser, free-flowing, and adaptive” (Burns & Stalker, 1961). Based on this student’s spouse information about his work environment, CVMC Rehab Department was mechanistic. However, changes by the current director are moving to a more organic design. The previous director before the current one had employee’s clock in and out, looked at notes, and if employee had any issues she would remind employees they were replaceable. This director saw herself as the authority,

For the rehab department, many of their patients come from the orthopedic surgeries from the floor above them. This is just an example of two organizations working together because of mutual interests. The relationship, and existence of organizations being linked or working together can be attributed to institutionalism.
Institutionalism
Institutional perspective “describes how organizations survive and succeed through congruence between an organization and the expectation from its environment” (Daft, 2013, p 201). Institutionalism also includes institutional environment “norms and values from stakeholders” (Daft, 2013, p. 201). Specific aspects of institutionalism include Mimetic Forces, Coercive Forces, and Normative Forces.

A benefit of organizational realities is, when appropriately applied, the organization can run more efficiently. As in this case, the new director’s reality should help employees to feel less burdened at work.
