When going to the grocery store or supermarket people have a one track mind. Their one and only concern really is food, but how do we know whether to go with organic or non-organic food? Organic and conventional products have been a subject of interest for me for a great amount of time because I have often questioned whether there really is a difference between the two. I always wondered about the cost, nutritional, and pesticide differences, if there were any. Through research, I have found several sources of information which allow me to determine more than a physical difference between the two products.
To start, labeling something as organic is specific and determined by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Regulations, made by the USDA and National Organic Program (NOP), are set extremely specific and it is relatively difficult to meet the standards. For example, organic food is produced using only certain pesticides with specific natural ingredients, such as soaps, lime sulfur, and hydrogen peroxide. However, not all natural substances are allowed in organic agriculture; some chemicals like arsenic, strychnine, and nicotine sulfate are prohibited. Along with being natural, pesticides must also be a part of the approved list established by the Organic Foods Production Act of 1990.
