Orenthal James Simpson Case Summary

Superior Essays
A court case that shocked America and their trust in the legal system. The topic of this paper is the trial and evidence that was presented. Orenthal James Simpson “former NFL player, broadcaster, and actor was accused of two counts of murder on June 12, 1994”(Britannica). The victims were Simpson’s ex wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her personal friend Ron Goldman. The two were found stabbed to death outside an apartment building in Los Angeles California. Due to Simpson’s relationship with the victims he quickly became their person of interest.
After five days had gone by Simpson found himself in a high speed chase that was broadcast to around ninety five million people. The trial took place on January 24, 1995 starting with opening statements.

The procuration called out every bad decision Simpson had made. They focused on the status he held and how the city treated him as if he was above the law. Darden explained, “Some people think that because the Defendant in this case is a celebrity, that perhaps he is someone above the law, that there ought to be special rules for him or that somehow he should be treated differently than any other Defendant. But that's not justice. And there are some people that think because Fuhrman is a racist, that we ought to chuck the law out of the window, throw it out of the window, perhaps it shouldn't be applied in this case. “ The purpose for this statement is to show that no matter how the defense team felt about Mark Fuhrman, he wasn't the one on trial, O.J. Simpson was. The public was used to seeing a six foot three man smiling on commercials. They didn't see the man that threw his wife out of their house, or the bruises he left on her countless times. The only person that witnessed what really happened was Nicole Brown Simpson and OJ Simpson took away her voice for …show more content…
This case has been used as a basis for many other cases since then. Most of America still ask the question of if he didn't kill them, then who did. The duration of the case ruined the career of Mark Fuhrman and many others who were targeted by the defense team of O.J. Simpson. It is my opinion and the opinion of most of the world that OJ Simpson simply got away with murder.

The homicide resulted from her truck colliding with a taxi cab while she was driving under the influence. There were two passengers in the taxi at the time of the collision and both were killed. Jacobson appealed the court’s decision on the basis that the trial court did not allow her attorneys to gauge whether or not the jury had become biased due to mid-trial publicity that included inadmissible information. On the fourth day of the trial, the Court was made aware of the fact that a local television network would be covering the incident that led to this trial on its evening news program.…

The most televised trial in recorded history was a murder trial where a famous NFL football player was accused of murder. The O.J. Simpson murder trial was controversial because of numerous reasons. He pled not guilty to the murder of his wife, Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman. The evidence and the time leading up to his arrest would make anyone believe that he was guilty beyond a shadow of a doubt, but the jury in 1995 found him not guilty. I believe that there is overwhelming evidence against O.J. Simpson, and he should have been found guilty for two murders.…

Following less than five hours of discussion on October 2, 1995, the jury returned to the courtroom the next morning to announce that they found the defendant not guilty of the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman. Members of the jury felt that because the gloves did not fit on the Juice’s hands, he could not have been guilty of killing Nicole and Ron (“O.J. Simpson Fast Facts”). The prosecution felt defeated, while the defense rejoiced. The Brown and Goldman families were outraged, the Simpson family felt relief. The trial was over, but the fight would never end.…

“Jackson wanted to contact an attorney but was dissuaded from doing so by Austrian, who promised Jackson that he would not be punished if he confessed. Shortly afterward, Jackson telephoned Judge McDonald and asked for the same consideration afforded Cicotte (a White Sox pitcher who was also a suspect). But when Jackson later spoke to McDonald personally in chambers, the judge did not like Jackson’s story (confession) and told him to expect no sympathy from the court” (Lamb 120). The case at this point seemed a little unfair in Jackson’s point of view, because there was no communication as to what the right thing for him to do was, he was told to give his story to reduce the penalty and was told that there will be no sympathy for himself. Judge Kenesaw Landis was a Chicago federal judge who was appointed to take control of the case and would later be the Major League Baseball commissioner.…

His friends say it is not in his character to commit such a horrible act. Simpson negatively impacted the public understanding of the justice system while positively impacting its efficiency by inspiring better job performance and awareness for domestic violence. The public involvement with the trial dramatically changed public perception of the justice system and how it works. For example, the jury’s decision was widely protested against and celebrated, causing those who disagreed with the verdict to be angered and distraught. The reaction of those who did not agree was deep rooted in the idea that the jury should reach a verdict that accurately represents what the vast majority would do.…

The court decision to acquit former NFL star O.J. Simpson of murder will forever be regarded as an example of how the we as Americans must trust the process of the legal system that we abide by. Guilt or innocence in the commission of a crime must be proved without a reasonable doubt, no matter the circumstances or evidence. Despite the extravagant evidence that implicated O.J. Simpson to the murder, the prosecution failed to establish in the minds of the jury that he committed the crime. The defense was able to shift the focus off the damaging evidence of the crime, and more towards the acquisition of that evidence, the ill-treatment of the crime scene, and the history of the Los Angeles Police Department in regards to treatment of minority groups. It can be said that the celebrity status of this case greatly influenced the verdict, as well as the circumstances that led up to that decision.…
