The truth is neither; coaches select who they want playing on their teams each year, on average it takes a new coach about three years to create their idea of what type of team they want to build. The first year as a coach, they still have many players from the previous year and from the old coaches team, the second year is where they're learning and developing plans for what they have and what they still need. That third year is where they have refined most of their skills and the players are used to the plays and have matured enough to stay discipline to them. So what defines a great team?
