The person who was most sad and angry in the movie was Conrad. Conrad was very close to his brother Buck, and they did everything together, with one of their best friends Joe. After the death of his brother, Buck, Conrad goes into a state of depression and self-blame. He slashes his wrist and is admitted to the hospital for eight months. After his recovery and release from the hospital, he is diagnosed with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. He has nightmares, problems sleeping, anxiety and the loss of motivation to live life. He wants to be back in the hospital because he enjoyed being around the people in the hospital; they gave him a sense of comfort and reassurance. He hates being back home and wishes he could go back to the hospital. All of this is happening to him because of the guilt he feels. He feels guilty for surviving and his brother dying. This is because Buck was the stronger and more popular than he and was favored by his mother more. As a result of this guilt, he is angry and sad, in which he suffers and punishes himself for it. He wishes he were the one who had died and not his brother, and he misses his brother deeply. Moreover, he stays away from friends, especially Joe, because every time he sees Joe, it reminds him of his brother, since they were always together. Thus, he avoids Joe at all costs.
