This movie portrayed a disengaged and authoritarian mother (Beth) and permissive and authoritative father (Calvin). Conrad is a lost child that is having trouble dealing with the death of his brother and dealing with the relationship that he has with his mother.
At the opening of the movie you could tell the relationships right away. Calvin and Beth are at the movies with friends and Calvin is at the movie but is sleeping. Calvin asks Conrad if he has contacted the doctor yet. Conrad did not want to eat, so Beth scrapped the French toast into the garbage disposal. While Calvin sat at the table and tried to have a conversation with Conrad before he went off to school. Conrad brought up that he called the doctor. Calvin was happy smiling and asking what he said and if this will affect swimming, while Beth sounded upset and annoyed to hear that Conrad called the doctor. Beth and Calvin went to a party; Beth overheard Calvin talking to someone about the family “problem” and she came over to talk. On the way home Beth is upset that Calvin was talking about the family problem.

Calvin was aware of it also and so his parenting took over to be easier on Conrad. Conrad at the end stated that he did not want that to happen. He wanted to be held responsible for his actions just like Buck was. You can see in this movie how the parental connection between Conrad and Beth has been broken. Beth is unable to have an emotional connection with Conrad. Love withdrawal promotes shame in Conrad. Conrad felt a sense of guilt from what happened with his brother. He felt that he should have been able to save his brother. His friend from school stated that Buck should have been able to hold on himself he was a swimmer
