Ordinary Characters In Miyazaki's Films

Decent Essays
I always believe ordinary people are extraordinary. The main characters in Miyazaki’s movies are really normal; usually there are teenagers. Miyazaki said he made Chihiro, a main character in one of his animations, no feature on purpose so that every girl can see themselves through Chihiro (Fantastic tales revisited; Japanese anime). As Miyazaki said, the characters in his animations are not handsome or beautiful at all but they all brave, kind-hearted, and selfless which make audience love them from the heart. The beauty of characters in Miyazaki’s works also reflects on story line. In movie Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Nausicaä, the main character, was bit by a frightened fox. However, Nausicaä didn’t kick the fox away; she gently

The Problem With Disney Disney films have had a significant impact in most of our lives. Whether it was “Pinnochio” or “Cinderella”, many of these Disney classics were shown to us during our childhood years. At such a young age, the majority of kids who watch these films will remember specific images that catch their attention; these images will be ingrained into their minds and help impact the way the kids view the world. For instance, while I was in elementary school, I would never lie because I thought that if I did, my nose would grow just like how Pinocchio 's nose did when he lied. The most prominent example of this comes from the emotional abuse of the Creature. His hideous death-like appearance caused everyone to flee from him, except DeLacy. DeLacy felt no fear when around the Creature because he could not see what the Creature looked like. Whereas no one else could see past his outward appearance, DeLacey gave the Creature his first real opportunity for friendship. In the same instance, the Creature saved a little girl from drowning only so the bystander could accuse him of trying to drown the small child.…

Melodrama was and is a popular form of drama which exaggerates a lot of its themes in order to appeal to the audience, is used a lot in the entertainment industry. Melodrama is very “Black and White” because by using this particular type of drama you are immediately aware of who are the stock characters without any confusion. The stock characters are your stereotypical characters required to make an entertaining story, there are 2 types of characters that can be used to make a story, and there are Dynamic Characters; who throughout the story undergo changes in their attitude / personality usually for the better (Like a villain changing his priorities to do good towards the end of the story). The image represents Mei and Satsuki’s acquaintance with Totoro when waiting for their father at the bus stop in a dark and rainy night. From the image, the setting is a somewhat scary scene without knowing its light and humorous tone. Rain is heavily pouring from the sky while Totoro only has a leaf atop his head. It seems that Totoro isn’t bothered standing in the rain and even somehow enjoys it in contrast to the two girls holding low so that the umbrella covers both Mei and Satsuki completely. Here lies one of the themes in My Neighbor Totoro and among many other Miyazaki’s films- the good and evil are all in a state of balance.…

Human beings are emotional creatures. We can be happy, sad, scared, and angry all at the same time. Some can be described as overly emotional, dramatic, cold, and crazy, but just how accurate and exclusive or inclusive are these given stereotypes, more importantly crazy? “Why we crave horror films?” by Stephen King is about the underlying reasons human beings are so drawn to the production of horror films and rollercoasters, what they bring out in us, and why we keep going back for more. Hayao Miyazaki, co-founder of Studio Ghibli, is one of the most widely acclaimed animation directors of all time. While Studio Ghibli is often nicknamed, “The Disney of Japan”, it more than stands on its own and, in my opinion, is superior in terms of storytelling and visuals. He is most known for his movie, My Neighbor Totoro, whose titular creature has become the mascot for the studio and an icon in Japanese media. While most reviews you would find for this movie are overwhelmingly positive, there are always a few rotten tomatoes in the basket. A reviewer from The New York Times, Stephen Holden, wrote that he thought the movie was without any real conflicts and, “crosses the line from sweet to saccharine”(Holden).…

Tim Burton’s beautifully haunting production of ‘Edward Scissorhands’ introduces our protagonist, represented by Johnny Depp, and explores the fictional story of this solitary boy with an unfortunate seemingly threatening oddity, being thrust into a world where he is glaringly blatant in the midst of the suburbs. Despite his intimidating exterior, it is almost immediately exposed that Edward is just an innocent, childlike soul, intent on serving others. The purpose of this film was to delve into the threatening manner of suburbia and its dismissive views on originality. Burton shattered cliches and stereotypes of who ‘monsters’ are by introducing the monster in the form of townspeople. As Tim Burton’s individual ordeals are translated into…
