Order of shots - In this scene the order of the shots mainly shows a large amount of distress and panic. This is because in the few shots where the character notices the vault is opening, we see him hearing and realising something is wrong with the vault. The next shot then shows the computer screen with the warning alarm notifying that the vault is opening after this we return to the character as he spills his tea all over him in shock. These shots are also known as shot-reverse-shot, which helps the audience to distinguish what the character is looking at and what’s causing them to be distressed. In this case finding out that the vault is being opened, something is clearly going wrong and so panic begins to set in. This sequence

Since almost everyone is desensitized, more detail is always better and most of the times, too much detail is not enough detail. Moreover, the passage also includes, “The way the camera reacts to the gunshot a startle reaction that brings pity and terror into the frame”. The use of the word “pity” here is smart and can be confusing. It is confusing in that the reader may not be able to figure out who he/she should feel pity for and it is smart as pity adds to the disturbing effect thus making it less “stripped” as he previously states.…

Mikhail Kalatozov’s The Cranes Are Flying (1957) follows the simple love of two Soviet citizens while showing the brutal reality of war and the ability to continue living and functioning as the world is upended. Narratively, this film is a break from those that preceded it—earlier films of the decade had far more positive outlooks on the war (propaganda). This film’s narrative, however, evoked the actual emotions those going through the war felt. Similarly, this film broke stylistically from earlier Soviet films, using techniques that harken back to the Soviet Montage era of silent filmmaking.…

Photography is the key element of mise en scene that determines how an audience will interpret the visual information in film. Orson Welles used the photography of his 1941 film Citizen Kane to emphasize aspects of the film he wanted viewers to focus on, and to remove non-essential information from the frame. This was accomplished through various camera tequniques including manipulation of angles and proxemity. Approaching the end of the film there is a scene just after Susan (played by Dorothy Comingmore) has left her husband Charles Foster Kane (played by Orson Welles), where he proceeds to trash her bedroom in a fit of anger. As Kane stumbles around the room sweeping items onto the floor and throwing things into walls, (Welles 1:48:25-50:27),…
