Reconstruction was a failure because most of the southern region rejected all forms of equality and construction while the colored was wanting to have a right to their own freedom and land. Looking back at it you can compare and contrast the similarities and differences of how the southern population treated its people and the northern population on how their people were treated talking about color of course. During the time of reconstruction not everyone had the same idea of moving forward as a country but instead to try to find ways to reestablish the laws of more southern ways of life. Only together as a whole they can move forward but until that is put into action nothing will go smooth and steady. The question is asked multiple times …show more content…
Even though slavery was abolished it was still looked down upon all blacks. Nothing came easy for them especially if they wanted to own property, have a right to vote, and employment. As shown in the fifteenth amendment “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude” (Doc 7). Even though this is stated in the constitution businesses and landowners still found ways to bend these laws for personal outlook. These Black Codes stated, “Every civil officer shall, and every person may, arrest and carry back to his or her legal employer any freedman, free Negro, or mulatto…” (Doc 4). These codes were pretty much set up so that any free person who was a former slave that didn’t have any current employment would be deemed as a vagrant. This segregation of the people leads into the thirteenth amendment which stated, “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted…” (Doc 1). This is where the people of color are treated unequal because of their background such as being a former slave. Which goes back to the idea of not being able to cast vote, Douglas states, “Slavery is not abolished until the black man has the ballot” (Foner 558). Thus, not allowing the people of color skin to ascend from the low life they lived in for a better chance in life. Not understanding the full meaning of freedom; colored folk still look for the answer of what is

These states then formed the Confederate States of America. The secession is very symbolic of the divide that was already present between the North and the South. The reconstruction of America was a failure because the goals were too idealistic and broad with no plan as to how the government would achieve them. Though the southern states were readmitted the government admitted the states under three separate plans, while overall achieving the goal, the smaller details of what the government required of the newly admitted states ultimately failed leaving room for the states to return with little fuss. Possible reason for this is how war ravaged the south was from the war and how little money they had to pay for it considering their work force leaving, no government there to help the citizens, and no funds sent to help rebuild the fundamental infrastructure, showing that the government’s goal of rebuilding…

After the Civil war, the United States had to welcome a formerly slave population and a formerly rebellious population back into the country. Just as slavery was the center of the Civil war, center to Reconstruction was the effort to ensure that former slaves had the right to breathe full meaning into their newly acquired freedom, and to claim their rights as citizens. The Reconstruction period, under the guidance of President Andrew Jackson, was a time to make reunion possible. With their newly founded freedom, African Americans were, supposedly, equal to white men. Freedom, the ability to express what you want and when you want to without care or concern of other’s opinion, was not always given the way it should have been.…

Also, when the “Redeemers” or “Bourbons” won public office, they wanted to undo the social and economic reforms in the South and bring back the old South, where blacks had no rights of any kind and were just slaves with no freedom. And during the first years of the 20th century, Jim Crow Laws were passed and it allowed legal segregation. With this law, “Blacks and whites could not ride together in the same railroad cars, sit in the same waiting rooms, use the same washrooms, eat in the same restaurants, or sit in the same theaters” (Brinkley, 397). All in all, “…the Jim Crow laws also stripped blacks of many of the modest social, economic, and political gains they had made in the late nineteenth century” (Brinkley, 397). Life wasn 't any better for African Americans or the Southerners after the Civil War. During Reconstruction, African Americans gained a very important right through the 15th amendment, the right to vote, which stated that, " The rights of the citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude. " This right was very important, but it didn 't last.
