Orcas would need to swim 1208 laps around the perimeter or 3,105 lengths in the park’s largest tank to equal what they would swim in the wild. (“Tanks”) Since adult male orcas have no space to swim freely, orcas have collapsed dorsal fins. Orcas are also fed an unnatural diet of thawed dead fish. (“Collapsed Dorsal Fins”) Orcas are unable to hunt and obtain water from their prey in captivity. SeaWorld gives them gelatin, a substance that is not natural for them, in an attempt to keep them hydrated. Gelatin is a protein obtained by boiling skin, tendons, ligaments, and bones with water. It is usually obtained from cows or pigs. (“Diet of Pig and Cow Bones”)
Tilikum the whale, who weighs 12,000lbs, alone consumes 83 pounds of gelatin everyday

Unfortunately, the average life span of the orcas at SeaWorld ranges from 25-30. The whales seem to die nearly three times the rate of wild orcas. It is extremely sad when we dive into how the whales are being taken care of. Many cases show that the whales become hyper-aggressive when they are held in captivity. Overnight the orcas are required to sleep in a small pool that is 20 feet-by-30 feet; the average length of an orca is 27 feet.…

They cannot survive in those conditions, they are large mammals who need to be surrounded by their own kind. A solution to this can be ending the public displays of orcas, it is manageable and the economic impact would be meager. With the remaining forty two orcas they can be put in retirement in sea pens, or be in rehabilitation and someday return to the wild. These Orcas can have a chance to live longer, and trainers would no longer have to risk their lives training them. If oceanarias are worried about losing profit they could try redesigning orca enclosures to satisfy a Killer Whales’ needs better (Rose, 10).…

Orcas swim up to one-hundred miles a day in the wild, but in captivity they have to swim the circumference of the tank 1,900 times just to equal that. Life in a cramped tank also leads to stress, boredom, and depression. These traits can cause orcas to demonstrate repetitive harmful behavior, such as banging their head on landing platforms. The tanks weren’t just a bad fit for orcas at Sealand; they’re also a bad fit for orcas at SeaWorld. “Orcas in captivity gnaw at iron bars and concrete from stress, anxiety, and boredom, sometimes breaking their teeth and resulting in painful dental drilling without anesthesia.”…
