Should Orcas Be Set Free? Many people can probably say they have been to a Shamu show at SeaWorld. They probably sat and watched how the magnificent Killer Whales do everything their trainer 's say. It’s amazing how well they listen and are able to learn all the different motions. In the 1960’s, Orcas began being hunted and sold to amusement parks for millions of dollars. They are pack animals, and travel together within their pod. Orcas are taken from their families, are underfed, and spend their life swimming in small tanks when they are used to swimming up to one hundred miles a day. These animals weigh several tons, and are trapped in a small pools for the rest of their lives for entertainment, and profit. Orca captivity is bad for the …show more content…
This can range from stress, aggression, and even in some studied cases, PTSD. The Orcas and their bodies are put under so much stress each and every day. Sometimes if the Orcas don’t do what the trainers say there is often physical abuse involved and food will be withheld. There is a lot of aggression, and whales and people have died because of this. There have been 3 reported fatal attacks with Orcas in captivity. In the wild there are no reported attacks. However, in captivity there has been 100’s of documented attacks. Well known former trainer, Dawn Brancheau, was killed in an attack by Tilikum in 2010. This was not just any attack. Some believed he was planning this attack. Tilikum could have easily killed Brancheau in a matter of seconds. Instead, he teased her for a while. He carried her around the pool, had her submerged under water for several seconds at a time, and he finally drowned and scalped her (Blackfish). Tilikum along with the other whales, are “ticking time bombs.” John Jett, a scientist and former SeaWorld trainer says, “There’s no place to swim and not much to do. His teeth cause infections. He’s sunburned. He’s bullied. Given his boring life and ill health, it comes as no surprise that he killed” (Tocco). Tilikum is the main breeder at SeaWorld, in fact he is the only breeder. His seamen is worth a lot of money. SeaWorld still breeds him even with their knowledge of his aggression. 54% of the Orcas that are born into captivity have Tilikum’s genes. This means that all the whales are more likely to be just as aggressive as Tilikum. These captive Orcas have had enough, and are now beginning to act out, and are going to continue to act out (Blackfish). Like Jett said, they are ticking time

The argument that was that was been touched upon in Blackfish was that if killer whales turn aggressive when been kept for amusement. For example, Tilikum a male orca that was kept being judged for accidents that he was involved in like the one with a former SeaWorld trainer where it’s said that she slipped into the pool and Tilikum drowned her, but other former workers would say it happened because she wasn’t being careful, so it was all her fault not Tilikums. Also, there was another accident that happened with Daniel Dukes he wandered into the pool after hours. The next day a former trainer saw Tilikum swimming with him on his back. In SeaWorld Orlando Florida on February 24, 2010; Dawn Brancheau was killed by one of their bull whales, Tilikum, also known as Tilli. Also with the help of CNN, a news station that many people trust, airing the documentary helps make it more plausible with the information being shown. In one of the many interviews being bared throughout the documentary to show credible information how the whales are treated, they interviewed former Director of Sealand, Steve Huxter. Huxter admitted to the terrible abuse the whales in his park faced. While training their new orca Tilikum, they would pair him with a trained orca and if Tilikum did not do what he was told then both whales would be punished. Deprived of food to keep them hungry, the trained orca became frustrated with Tilikum and would rake him with his teeth as payback.…

Less than one month ago, the infamous killer whale Tilikum, died from health issues. Studies have discovered that orcas in their natural habitat live a life span as long as humans. Tilikum perished in captivity at less than half of this age. During his restraint, he had been responsible for the death of three people. SeaLand and SeaWorld did not place the blame on the whale, but instead labeled all incidents as the trainer’s error.…

According to “5 Arguments For Keeping Captive Cetaceans,” “Those who do not have a pod cannot join another at random.” The orcas, if they were to be released from captivity, would become isolated from the orca social structure; orca social structure is one of the…

At least 161 orcas have died in captivity at Seaworld due to the small enclosures and dangerous training. Seaworld is a marine resort that captives water related animals such as orcas, dolphins, and flamingos. They train the animals to put on shows and do tricks that they would never naturally do. Tilikum, a 22 foot, 12,500 pound orca, was captured in November of 1983 when he was just a calf. Trainer Keltie Byrne was pulled to the bottom of a tank by Tilikum and drowned.…

Did you know there are about 17,000 individual animals in the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium located in Omaha, Nebraska? This is America’s largest zoo, yet this is only one the 142 accredited zoos across America, this may seem like a lot, but America only has a handful of zoos compared to the 414 zoos located in Germany. One of the many positives that zoos and aquaria provide is there revenue and job opportunity. Just in America the annual zoo revenue averages at about $5,136,250,000 and they offer about 142,000 jobs (Statistic Brain Research Institution, 2015). The economic factors of the zoo are huge.…

The tanks at SeaWorld are also a hazard to the trainers. SeaWorld is fighting back because they must, or else they would look like they do not care about either their orcas or the death of one of their employees. Unfortunately, Tilikum’s death is only encouraging more unfair ammo against SeaWorld, even though there is no evidence that Tilikum’s death was…

What I would suggest as a solution to this issue is already in progress for the beginning part. Sea World has started a program to prevent any further whale breeding (Pedicini). The Orcas in captivity now will be the last set of Orcas. I would suggest a huge rehabilitation center for these whales.…
