Tom came prepared to defend oralism. He went prepared to speak against manualism and stated that “I could at least cite these arguments against the use of fingerspelling for young children” (page 211), but later in the course of the meeting he changed his mind . During the meeting, a Deaf man stood up and explained to the crowd that the only reason that he could speak that well is because he became Deaf after he had acquired speech. He explained that their children will never speak as well as does. He also explained that ASL is a real language. This moment was eye-opening for Tom and Louise since they were never told anything positive about American Sign Language. Up until that moment Tom realized that he did not actually know any Deaf
