For my Oral History Essay, I decided to do my foster mom, Krista Platz. Krista was raised in Wadena, Minnesota. She had one younger sister, Sarah. Her younger sister was five years younger that her. When she was about four years old, she moved, and she attended kindergarten in Park Rapids, because her mom got a job there. She worked their for one year, until budget cuts were made and they cut her job. After that happened, they moved back to Wadena. Furthermore, Krista attended elementary school in Wadena, she also went to highschool there too.

For example, people would roll the bottom of their jeans to make them tighter around the leg. Girls also teased their hair to give it more volume and a more “bigger” look. After they teased their hair, they would put a great amount of hairspray in their hair to make it stay tight and big.

Krista lived with her mom, Dorothy Platz, dad, Tony Platz, and her sister, Sarah. Her mom was Lutheran, and her dad was Catholic. They both really believed that their kids needed to know both religions, so to solve that problem, they would to a Lutheran church during the school year, and go to the Catholic church during the summer. After doing that, they thought it was a great idea, and a great way for both of the girls to connect with god, and new friends. The Platz family had a couple traditions that have been passed down through the years. One of them was lefse. Every christmas, and christmas eve, they would make lefse from scratch. Another tradition that they had was swedish pancakes. Krista had a grandmother, that was a sweet lady. I've heard that she had made some pretty great food, and desserts. One recipe that has been passed down was her special pie

My eighty-three year old grandfather handed me an overwhelmingly thick book titled “Sheils Family History” and said, “Here; look through this. Maybe you’ll run into one of these people.” I suppressed a laugh, thinking of the near zero probability of me “running into” one of my distant family members as I travelled abroad for the next two weeks. However impatient, I sat quietly listening to my grandpa chirp away about our ancestors and his war stories, while I pictured myself for the next fourteen days in a completely new place.…

I chose to interview my mother, Hollie Heim. Her life started off by being born six weeks late on March 19th, 1975. As a child, her family was very poor and her father wasn’t around as a child. This was because he went to Davenport and got a good job to try to support the family, only being home on weekends. Although her family was not very stable, she played football, piano, and the clarinet.…

The first interview I listened to was a Halloween special and it was about this family who had just arrived home from an outing on Halloween and there were two armed men with halloween masks on in their garage. The two men forced the mom, Janette, and the dad, Greig, into the trunk of their car while the baby was still a carseat in the back of the vehicle. While in the trunk Janette was messing around with wires to see if she could find the trunk release handle all while hoping her child was okay. The car finally stopped and the two men took all of the family’s money and their bank cards. Before leaving they stated that if the pin number is wrong they will come back and kill Janette and Greig.…

Oral History Project Interviews aren’t overly interesting when you’ve known the interviewee for all your college and adult life. When you hang out with someone half of every single week you tend to learn a lot about them. Most of the questions I could think of I already knew the answer to and had for a couple of years. I planned and worked out a good thirty or forty questions but, again, most of them I could answer myself, since again we’ve known each other for such a long time. My planning and preparation, for the most part, didn’t really help me go through the interviewing process.…
