Oral History Interview Project
Oral history is the oldest type of historical inquiry, and one of the most modern. It is a field of study and a method of gathering, preserving, and interpreting the voices and memories of people, communities, and participants in past events. (Oral history association, 2012) So basically there is an interviewer asking an interviewee about his experiences in his life, and the interview can serve for many purposes. For this project, the interview was for us to see how aging truly affects someone and there’s no better way to do that than to interview someone who has experienced life already. My dad would soon start to work in some factory first shift, and he said the transition was so hard because he went from never working his whole life to working everyday for ten to twelve hours. He said this was very challenging because my mom worked second shift and he would only really get to see her for a couple of hours in the morning. He would walk everywhere for three months, until he had $800 to buy a 1998 ford tempo. He drove this car for five years, until he upgraded to a 1996 grand prix pontiac. The transition was far from easy, and he wasn’t sure how he was going to live like this day to day. The thing that really upset him a lot and caused him much grief was the passing of his dad. Whenever, he was in the airport coming to the United States he told his dad goodbye and that he would see him soon and his dad replied to him and said “Edo, you won’t see me again.” They both started to break down and cry and for him that was a memory that he’ll never forgot. His dad was hard on him, and showed him tough love. So to see his dad break down and cry right there was something that really hit him. His mother would soon pass away not too shortly after my dad’s death and not too long after his mom’s passing, his sister would die of Lung Cancer. Those deaths really affected him and hit him where it hurts, and he said the only thing that kept him going was us. I …show more content…
Aging seems like such a long process, but in reality it’s the farthest thing away from it. One thing that I really got this interview was that life is truly and honestly what you make it. Life might not make sense at the moment, but it eventually will. Everyone has their own set of struggles and experiences hardships. It’s how you react to this situation, which defines you. Also, Always try to be close with family, because in the end that’s all you got. My dad still has many regrets dealing with his dad and mom, and its regrets in my opinion, he will never let of go. I could not think of completing this project over anyone else, my dad is truly my hero. It’s hard seeing him age and get older, but as the years go by he honestly looks younger. I’m starting to think now that he has Benjamin Button disease. Aging is truly learning process and you never truly know everything. If you stay active, and hardworking throughout your whole life, you will be rewarded and live a long and industrious life. .I hope one day that I can be a role model to my kids like my dad, and I hope to be half the man he
