Good afternoon, everyone. Before I’ll start, let me tell you a story about the turkey and the bull.
One day, a turkey was talking to a bull.
“I love to be able to get to the top of that tree, but I haven’t got the energy,” the turkey said.
“Well, why don’t you eat some of my dung? They are full of nutrients that will energize you and help you go up the tree,” replied the bull.
The turkey ate a bit of dung, and could reach the lowest branch of the tree.
The next day, he ate some more and reached the second branch.
And finally the day arrived, and he was sitting on the top of the branch feeling proud.
But the hunter noticed him and shot him out of the tree.
The moral of the story is: “Bull shit might get you to the top, …show more content…
It can be a form of breaking the rules in sports, secretly doing tricks while gambling, flirting with other people while having a girlfriend or boyfriend, or copying answers in an exam. Statistically, more than 60% of high school students admitted to have seriously cheated in a test. Though it may give us the feeling of satisfaction for getting a high grade without working hard for it, let us all remember that cheating might get us to the top, but it won’t keep us there.
Why do we cheat? Why do you cheat? Based on my experience, I cheat because of three things – the pressure of having high expectations not just from my parents but also from the people who knew my achievements in grade school, the fear of failing or not getting my standard grade, and acquiring the feeling of pride of having very high grades.
Once, when I was in Grade 9, we were having a test in World History and I was confident that I’d be able to get a perfect score if I got that one item right. I had an answer but I wasn’t sure so I asked my seatmate, “What’s number 8?” and she said, “Moat.” So I wrote moat, but unfortunately, I didn’t notice that my teacher saw me cheat… And you know what happened? This happened. (shows test paper) The next time we had a test, my teacher already brought a camera and a …show more content…
I still keep this paper because this reminds me of what happened. I hated that teacher ever since and the feeling was mutual for her, but now that I think about it, I am actually grateful for that experience because ever since that day, I avoided cheating in exams.
The experience taught me that we, humans, often focus on what we don’t have instead of what we have. In exams, we often pay attention to the blank items rather than those which we were able to answer on our own. This leads us to look at other people’s answers rather than analyzing them on our own. This hinders us from using our own talents and capabilities because it will make us dependent on others. Instead of training ourselves to become better, we often find shortcuts that can’t really help us in the future.
Another lesson I learned is that when we cheat, we may think that we’re lying to our teachers, but the truth is, we are lying more to ourselves. We are deceiving ourselves by letting ourselves think that we had achieved something when in truth, we did not. We deny ourselves of education because we don’t anymore strive to be the best we can
