In this industry there is considerable data to justify the use of the assessment center process (Terpak, 2008). The process begins when the agency desiring testing establishes the criteria for the job. This is accomplished primarily through a job analysis which will define the knowledge, skill and ability necessary for the position (Rausch, 2008). One job analysis commonly assessed is the position of a “Company Officer” (Terpak, 2008). In this role the candidate must be proficient in a number of areas and have a strong understanding of fire department operation. Some of the areas measured are the ability to determine the mode of operation and initiate a plan of action (Terpak, 2008). This plan of action may include the identification of hazardous conditions and communication of these hazards to the appropriate members to reduce further injury or loss of life. Through the use of the assessment center a number of dimensions can be assessed to determine which candidate is best suited for the position of company officer. Additionally, the oral assessment center will judge the candidate on a scale that is more closely aligned with real responsibilities the candidate will have once
