Optometry Research Paper

Throughout my senior year of high school, I was bombarded with myriad versions of the same question, “What do you want to do when you get out of college?” The growing pressure I felt to decide on a college major, as well as a career path, weighed heavily on my mind. Of course I knew certain attributes I wanted my future job to have, such that I wanted to work with people on a one on one basis, particularly children; and I wanted my job to challenge me. However, I possessed such a limited knowledge of the potential jobs that could possibly fulfill my desires, that I felt hopeless anytime I attempted to make a decision about my future. Truthfully, I chose to pursue an occupation the field of optometry prior to having any experience or exposure to eye care. Besides optometrists’ use of the Snellen chart, I thought that optometrists simply distributed glasses to individuals. After researching the field of optometry, I was, and continue to be, utterly fascinated by all the different aspects of optometry; specifically, dealing with patients that have a color vision deficiency and those in need of vision therapy. The opportunity that arises from the occupation to asses a problem and use my knowledge to diagnose and treat the problem immensely excites me. In addition, my specific desire to work on children blossomed during my senior year of high school after I was offered a soccer coaching position for eight and nine-year-old girls. Being able to educate and develop relationships with my players brought so much joy to my life that I have continued to coach the years following.
