Why do eye doctors dislike drinking from cups? They, . . . well, I’ll tell you later. Anyway, while we’re on the subject, why am I talking about optometrists? I have my mind set on becoming an eye doctor, if I’m not an architect. I want to be an optometrist because it pays well, it has just the right amount of responsibility, work, and drive to be trustworthy, and there are so many open doors. Who wouldn’t want to be an optometrist, what with all the fun things you get to do and the experiences you have. Being an optometrist has its advantages. The average pay is roughly $90,000 per year, not too much and not too close to minimum wage. The projected job outlook is 24%(which is much faster than the average growth), and coupled with the projected 8,100 new jobs in the coming year, one gets a sense that, even though there may not be many jobs in the near future, there will be an abundance in the long run. So, to sum it up, a good pay and a good chance of being hired are two great reasons to be an eye doctor. An optometrist has just the right amount of “stuff”, by which I mean responsibility, work, and drive to be a better person. Responsibility is a moderate burden to bear. Opportunities to talk to people, get to know them, and possibly minister to them. Patients need to feel comfortable, and it’s partly the doctor’s job to comfort them. I have an open door right now, or rather, highschool-and-college age, to job shadow my own eye doctor. That is a perfect example of an open door. But that’s just one opportunity of, well, almost infinite possibilities. Okay, maybe not infinite, but pretty close.
