Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is characterized by chronic and exaggerated worry and tension about such things as health or finances, and is usually accompanied by a persistent feeling that something terrible is going to happen. Often it is extremely difficult to pinpoint the reasons for these intense feelings of anxiety, causing a person to worry more, and can keep some individuals from concentrating on daily tasks. Symptoms of GAD can vary and can be any combination of numerous emotional, behavioral and physical symptoms. There are many different techniques for the treatment of these symptoms, but they can essentially be grouped in to three main categories. The three categories for the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder are; self-help, psychotherapy and medication. The first type of treatment for GAD is self-help. For a lot of people, once they realize that their anxiety is starting to have a negative impact on their day to day life, they will search for ways to help themselves. One of the most important things a person can do is to attempt to lead a healthy lifestyle by getting enough sleep, exercising frequently and eating healthy. Activities such as meditation, yoga or Pilates have also been a highly effective way for some people to relax and ease some of the daily anxieties and tension.
