The ultimate goal of any for-profit organization in the contemporary corporate arena is usually to satisfy clients through the provision of quality products. This corporate objective is achieved through the incessant improvement of the products as well as the production processes, along with maintaining the lowest production cost possible. In particular, manufacturing plants focus on improving production through thoughtfully adoption and implementation of production facility layouts that most suitably meet their production improvement goals, while focusing on production cost reduction methods that do not compromise quality. This report discusses production and quality improvement at reduced costs in car manufacturing plants.

Ingram (2014) mentions that this layout is suitable for manufacturing plants in which workstations deal with the production of large product volumes before the semi-finished products are transferred in bulk to the next production area, which may be in the vicinity of the current workstation or far from it within the production globe. Ingram (2014) says that one of its advantages is the augmentation of economies of scale as its design allows pooling of resources, leading to the functional efficacy of individual processes. Other advantages include promotion of specialization and allowing mass production. Its disadvantage includes reduced efficiency when dealing with the production of individual custom orders, keeping in mind that custom information is required to be sent along with the semi-finished products.

Dhahran British Grammar School (2005) records that the idea of mass production was developed by Henry Ford while developing the assembly line, and it has been adopted in many plants.
