Oprah Winfrey, an entrepreneur, actress, director, producer, and philanthropist, has a net worth of $3.1 billion (Forbes). With all of this in mind, before I began reading about her, I assumed Oprah had a sturdy childhood, a sturdy family, and a sturdy upbringing. I couldn 't have assumed anything farther from the truth. Oprah endured many hardships throughout her life as a child. She was an African American child in the late 1960s when they were aggressively demanding their rights, she was a victim of physical and sexual abuse, she was the child of a teen-mom, and she was tossed from home to home and from school to school. According to her favorite teachers, Oprah excelled just as she did in high school while at TSU. She appeared in many plays and performed many speeches. Because of Oprah 's success in everything she did while in college, she was asked to audition for and received a position at WTV-TV as an anchorperson. Oprah obtained many job titles while working at WTV-TV. She would work her way up the totem pole, and they would ask her to try other jobs as well. Because of racial problems and big changes taking place in TV news where women were concerned, Oprah decided to leave WTV-TV and became a co-anchorperson and reporter at WJZ-TV in …show more content…
These nominations included: Oprah and her costar, Margaret Avery, for Best Supporting Actress, and Whoopi Goldberg as Best Actress. At the Academy Award ceremony, Oprah had to sit uncomfortably in her seat due to her dress being too tight. Oprah did not win Best Supporting Actress, but she soon forgot about her first Oscar. In the weeks after the Academy Awards, Oprah began to work on her second feature film, Native Son. During this time, "A.M. Chicago" was retitled "The Oprah Winfrey Show." The newly titled show was scheduled to be broadcast nationally. Oprah was confident that her talk show would be popular, and with it she would be able to help people all around the U.S. With this syndication of her show and her past successes, Oprah was a millionaire by the age of thirty-two. Not only was Oprah 's show becoming more popular and successful, but Oprah was discovering love. Oprah dated Stedman Graham, a former model and head of Athletes Against Drugs. "They say if you stop looking you can find it. You just really need to stop looking and putting pressure on it, " Oprah commented about meeting Mr. Right.
