Oprah Winfrey is an inspiring woman that many people look up to. Today she is one of the wealthiest African American women and has earned the respect of the American population. In contrast, when she was just a child, her life was harder and had challenges. Without those challenges, she wouldn’t be the person that she is today. Oprah Winfrey was born on January 29, 1954. As a child, she was born into poverty. Soon after Oprah was born, her parents divorced and left her in the company of her maternal grandmother. Her grandmother taught her to read and write, which soon put her in third grade instead of kindergarten. At six years old, she was sent North where her mother was living in a dangerous neighborhood, where she was sexually abused …show more content…
In January 1984, she moved to Illinois and took the job of being an anchor on a different talk show, called A.M. Chicago. In September 1985, they renamed the show, and called it the Oprah Winfrey Show, and the show was expanded to one hour. Also in 1985, Oprah took part in a few movies, her best one, The Color Purple, made her very popular even still today, and brought even more people to watch her talk show. Her talk show soon won several Emmys for Best Talk Show, and Oprah Winfrey was honored as The Best Talk Show Host. In 1996, Oprah wanted to get the country reading, so she published a book called The Deep End of the Ocean, and this book quickly rose up to be a number one best seller. More than seven hundred and sixty thousand copies were sold by 1997. Oprah then started her own book club, which people attended greatly. The club lasted for six years, until in 2002 Oprah cut back and did not have the book club as a monthly event. In present day, Oprah is one of the wealthiest women in America. As of 2013, her estimated net worth was $2.8 billion. Oprah uses her money in success to improve the lives of others. In 2017, she will be making appearances in TV shows and movies, including the movie The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks and being a guest on the Ellen Show.
