After she hosted three talk shows which touched the lives of millions, Oprah Winfrey became the most powerful woman alive. Oprah lived through a poverty stricken childhood which made her the strong woman she is today. Her rags to riches story has taught the lesson that anything is possible and she uses her life story to inspire others. She opens her life up to those who will accept her. Oprah Winfrey uses the power earned from her success as a talk show host to benefit the community by donating to philanthropies and charities; however, a modern audience may question her true motives as something other than true selflessness. From the beginning, her life was poverty stricken. She was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi, on January 29, 1954. Oprah lived in a small farming community with her mother. Unfortunately, she was sexually abused at a young age by a number of men. The abuse caused Winfrey to move to Nashville to live with her father, Vernon, where she began to work in broadcasting and radio ( In 1976, she moved to Baltimore, Maryland and hosted the talk show People Are Talking. After eight years, Winfrey was recruited to host her own morning show, A.M. Chicago. Her success as a talk show host led her to land a role in Steven Spielberg’s 1985 film The Color Purple ( Oprah Winfrey finally created her own talk show called the Oprah Winfrey Show. Little did she realize that her newly found show would eventually create an empire.
