You probably think of Oprah Winfrey as a billionaire who hosted her own talk show, but did you know she had an extremely hard childhood? For people that face as many struggles as Oprah did as a child, they are usually not able to overcome them. However, Oprah was able to defeat the odds and grow even stronger from her obstacles. The main reason Oprah became who she is today is by her positive attitude and her commitment to never getting discouraged. Despite overcoming poverty and being sexually abused, Oprah Winfrey was able to become an inspiration and leader to many people around the world.

She always thought of the best in the worst of times. One major motivation for her was her father, Vernon Winfrey. He was her biggest supporter as he changed her for the better (Street 1). Her life took off with flying colors after all of the help he gave her. Oprah was in an extremely hard place in her life when her mom threw her out of the house. She was a difficult child to handle so therefore her father and his wife took her under their wing, but only under strict conditions (Kelly 36). He made her a better person by making her work as hard as she could in school and become a proper lady (Kelly 36). He is also the one that brought her into the talk show and public speaking business (Street 1). If it wasn't for her father, who knows where Oprah would be today. Oprah’s attitude towards her life is another major component in what helped her overcome anything that was a challenge to her. She once said,“that a person can change his future by merely changing his attitude.” (Street 1) She would transform her negative thoughts to positive thoughts and that greatly changed her perspective on her struggles (Street 1).
