Hardworking, relatable, educated, confident, and successful is what we all strive to be. One woman who obtains all of these traits is none other than Oprah Gail Winfrey. Oprah is the prime example of one who "rises from the ashes." She overcame great hardships throughout her life and she did not let anything get in her way. Born on January 29, 1954, in Kosciusko, Mississippi, Oprah Gail Winfrey was born of an unmarried couple. Oprah was originally named "Orpah," which was is from the Bible, but people mispronounced it to the point where the name Oprah stuck. Because her parents were so young, Oprah was raised by her grandmother, Hattie, until the age of six. Oprah said her grandmother made a huge impact in her life. She moved on to being a talk show host on Baltimore's local talk show, People are Talking. In 1984, she began to host AM Chicago, which easily became the most popular talk show. Within a year of being the host for AM Chicago, the show's name changed to The Oprah Winfrey Show. Meanwhile, around the same time as the launching of her show, Oprah was casted to play a role in the film, The Color Purple. After the film's release, Oprah became more known and her popularity rose. On her show, she would show the audience what was happening at the time and would bring up controversial topics. Oprah used her show to inform people the current events in the world. Also, she used her show to help people in multiple ways. She awarded things, such as money to people who were in dire need of it, and she gave prizes to those who deserved it. Oprah encouraged others to do good. She started her own charity to support education and women. Oprah also made a scholarship program for people who use their education to serve their community. To promote education, she started Oprah's Book Club, in which Oprah herself chooses and discusses books with her audience. Not only does Oprah encourage people to improve their education, but she promotes a healthier self. She is living proof of transforming into a healthier self.
