Oprah Gail Winfrey was born on January 29, 1954 in Kosciusko, Mississippi to Vernita Lee, a former maid, and Vernon Winfrey, a barber, coal mineworker, and city councilman; who broke up soon after conception. Oprah spent her early years on her grandmother, Hatti Mae’s farm while her mother searched for work in the North. Although Oprah Winfrey has been known as the richest African American and woman of the twentieth century she does not come from a rich or even middle class family. While Winfrey had a challenging and distasteful childhood, she did not let that disable her from making the best of her life and influencing the society through literacy, her relentless messages of positivity and self-improvement. Oprah Winfrey came from a rough background where she was shuttled back and forth from her grandmother to her mother. Oprah Winfrey’s grandmother taught her to read at an early age. By the age of three, Winfrey was reciting poems and Bible verses in neighborhood churches.
