In India, the sexism is a lot more prevalent than in America. The women in India are seen as forced to stay home, they do not have much of a choice. In India, there are scenarios in which women are seen to have no other option than to be housewives. But, women have other options on how to live their lives. India has stories such as Young Rural Women in India Chase Big – Dreams where women are seen to have the opportunity to choose to work in factories or to follow the traditional pathway of Indian women.
2B. Women in India are expected to respect everyone, especially men and elders. I think this is somewhat similar to American culture. I think everyone in America expects to be respected. When the women are introduced to a factory supervisor they “dive to touch her feet, a traditional gesture of respect toward elders”. There was no hesitation with the girls when an elder was present, the girls basically jumped to her feet to show the supervisor respect. There are other rules in which the Indian girls had to follow. Men hold a higher position over women, this is true in both India and America. In today’s society men have the majority of the political positions in America’s government. This demonstrates that men hold the majority of the powers distributed in America, which can effect women. Some may say that the situation in which Clinton lost to Trump in the presidential election is an example of how a less qualifying man can defeat a woman. For the American people to say this demonstrates how they believe that men still have an advantage over women just for the fact that he is male. In a nuclear family, the man would most likely be the financial provider for his family. Men also hold the roles of protecting their wives and children from any type of abuse or danger. The role of men having to protect their family leads women to become dependent on women, therefore men tend to have a great about of power over women. In the article, a woman says, “A young wife in her village was set on fire in a domestic dispute”. This demonstrates the kind of power that men have over women, it’s astonishing. When the girls try to rebel, because they have not been paid on time, Ellen Barry states, “their strike has lasted less than five minutes”. Even when the girls try to display an act of authority and demand, the man in charge can dismiss that act.
