As stated "There was a time men were kind… There was a time, then it all went wrong." The narrator describes as men, from her experience, as manipulative and how they only show a good side of them to get what they want. Later on when they achieve their goal of getting what they desire and all the sweet talk is over, they make women feel an excruciating heart ache. Every idea of life being the color pink is replaced by a nightmare due to a man who was heartless enough to make a mess upon her innocence and just leave her to go through the consequences by herself. In the song the main character find yourself being destroyed by this man. He turns her goals in life to shame. As stated in the song "As they tear your hope apart.As they turn your dream to shame." Fantine dream that the love with her lover would never die but unfortunately his love for her wasn't real and he immediately left her when her pregnancy was brought to light. He crushed her hope of one day her dream coming true with his merciless actions. Rafaela is a beautiful woman in the book who was sired by her husband into an eternal nightmare. Because of her beauty, she was locked inside her house with no freedom whatsoever. As stated in the book "And always there is someone offering sweeter drinks, someone promising to keep them on a silver string".Rafaela's husband offered her " sweeter drinks" or better life but when he got what he wanted he turned that better life into a living hell. Rafaela was tricked into believing her life would be like a fairytale but now the only thing she obtained from your marriage is the loss of freedom. In the book, Minerva is a victim of her husband who left her with two kids and keeps coming back to her when he wants something from her. Minerva wishes to be a poet but how can she when her husband crushes every single dream she has? As stated in the piece "But that night he came back and sends a big rock through the window.Then he is sorry and she opens a door again.Same story." Minerva is abused by her husband which is shown when he throws a rock without knowing or caring if she was there or not. Her husband doesn't even let her dream and the reader gets a glimpse of this and how he doesn't let her stand by the window which represents having hope while seeing the freedom passed by through out the whole book.
