Robert Merton, around 1950, developed a theory defining Anomie as the separation between one’s legitimate goal and a socially acceptable way of obtaining it.
The ways of overcoming a state of Anomy would include: Conformity-accepting the situation and doing one’s best with whatever means available. Cashiers have practically been replaced by self- checkouts and customer service representatives by robots. By minimizing expenses, they are maximizing profit- with little regard of the unemployed. These same people have convinced us that it is beneficial to pay to shop, such as at Sam’s Club, because we will “save more than we spend”. With little competition how do we know what anything is worth?
