Social oppression and greed are common themes shown in novels and or novellas to teach a moral lesson. Common themes in John Steinbeck’s writings include political themes, rebellion, corruption. In The Pearl by John Steinbeck, the author tries to help us understand that danger exists in placing hope on one thing either being emotional or material. This happened in the novella as a result of Kino’s finding of the pearl which led him to become “closed minded”.
The finding of the pearl caused the community become envious. This caused a lot of problems. After the pearl was found the community changed, showing the consequences of what material can do to corrupt people’s mind. “All manner of people grew interested in Kino” (Steinbeck 23). The entire community was suddenly interested in kino once they learned he found the pearl. Even people he didn’t know started to approach him.
“The Pearl is “a brutal story but flashes beauty” (Steinbeck and Wallsten). An example is when the doctor refuses to treat Coyotito, Kino’s son, due to his race and social status. This doctor cared more for money than treating the baby. This was what pushed Kino to go find the pearl so that he could help his family. A blessing then turned into a curse, Kino
