For years many people have argued that retribution is morally flawed and problematic in concept and practice. It is my belief the death penalty is revenge and gives no retribution. We cannot teach that killing is wrong by killing. As Archbishop Desmond Tutu once said ‘To take a life when a life has been lost is revenge, …show more content…
In the U.S.A 130 people sentenced to the death penalty have and have been found innocent since 1973, and this is just one example of the mistakes and flaws made in the justice system. It is inevitable that innocent people are going to be executed and this is because human justice is fallible. The average time spent on death row before execution can be between 11-15 years, imagine sitting in a cell for such a long period of time knowing that you are innocent but having no way of proving it. How can you get back such a long period of your life missed? You can’t! For year’s witnesses, prosecutors and jurors have been making mistakes on the lives of the innocent. A very well known case of this is the case of Timothy Evans; Timothy was only 25 when he was executed for the murder of his wife and 14-month-old daughter after begging for his life and pleading innocent, 3 years after the execution of Timothy, John Christie turned him self into the police for murdering 8 women including Timothy Evan’s wife and daughter. This is just one example of the many mistakes and flaws made by the justice system.

The bible states that ‘Thou shalt not kill’ but capital punishment completely abolishes this. How is the convict supposed to live with and learn from their mistakes if they are dead? In my opinion Capital punishment is an easier way out for the jailbird, but if you give the murderer a life sentence instead of a death sentence without possibility of parole there is time to think, time to question and repeat.
But at the same time do you, as a member of our civilised society, believe that capital punishment lowers the tone of civilisation? All over the world there are societies that do not tolerate torture, and believe that the death penalty is an inappropriate method to use in a modern, civilised society. Do you not agree that Capital Punishment is done in cold blood?
The capital punishment in my eyes is unnecessary, it’s invasive and harmful. Capital punishment is the most harmful punishment around and should only be used is there is not a less harmful punishment to match the crime made; other punishments will enable states to
