Gun Control in America
Guns are a large part of American culture, there are more than 260 million guns in America (Wilson). They are used for sport, hunting, and defense. Many Americans are pro-gun, while others are anti-gun. There are arguments for both sides. The anti-gun arguments often target and attack the law-abiding citizens who choose to exercise their rights as Americans and own guns. They are not the problem, the ones who are doing harm with guns are anything but a role model citizen. Gun control is a growing issue in American but the problem does not lie within law abiding gun owners.

Guns do not kill people, people kill people, with guns. Anti-gun activists claim that criminals are less likely to use a gun if it is against the law or if they are not able to obtain a gun legally. Anti-gun activists also claim that attacks with guns are far more violent than any other weapon (Henigan). The fact that guns are deadly is not avoidable, what can be said is that if a good guy has a gun, the attack will be less deadly, because the shooter will be subdued by a good gun. Criminals will not follow the laws, they are criminals for a reason, they choose to break the law and if they are a killer, they do not care what they must do to take lives. It has been argued time and time again that the second amendment does not cover the guns of today’s world because they have evolved so much since the time of the writing of the Bill of Rights but in 2008, the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that the second amendment protects the rights of Americans to own guns (Perez-Pena). There are already many restrictions on guns to protect civilians. Those with criminal records, mental illness, drug addictions, and illegal immigrants cannot possess guns. Civilians are not allowed to buy or own an automatic weapon (Perez-Pena). One major anti-gun argument is that civilians can go out and buy a gun like that of a soldier, the gun may aesthetically look the same but it will not function the same (Davidson). There are restrictions on carrying guns as well, most states will allow a legal gun owner to open carry their gun in public without a permit, while most states require training and a permit to conceal carry a gun in public, few states allow conceal carry without a permit
