Opportunity Knocks At some point we have all walked the halls of high school. For myself, I am still walking the jungle-like halls of George Wythe High School. In kindergarten my mom use to always tell me to be nice, listen in class, and make some friends. I had always been a shy kid, but I had seemed to have the friend thing figured out. I was a fortunate kid in school, I was polite, I had the nicer school supplies, and I knew how to tie my own shoes. In kindergarten that is a big deal to other kids who may not be as lucky as you. Kindergarten introduced me to one of my friends that I am lucky enough to say today that she is still my friend. We were in the same kindergarten class and had met one day on the playground. I watched 14 Up: Japan which is about several different adolescents and where they are in life since they were last talked to at age seven. Every adolescent was asked what they wanted to do in the future or what they enjoyed doing at age seven and was asked about it again when they were fourteen. I had learned from a student here at UWL, that is from Japan, that they go to school almost all day, more hours than we do, and have to take these extremely difficult exams to enter high school and then to enter college. Adolescents are in the moratorium stage because they are so young and not sure what options there are. If they missed the critical period for learning they may have a difficult time getting into school.…
