Neuroscientists at the John Hopkins University School of Medicine were able to determine that a group of cells found in the adult brain remain highly active by transforming into insulating nerve fibers. These nerve fibers then formed scars that contributed to tissue repair when they were artificially inserted into a group of mice.

Their work brings to light how these multifunctional cells communicate with one another in the central nervous system (CNS), also known as the brain and spinal cord. The removal of one of these special cells, known as oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs), causes a neighboring cell to rapidly divide in order to restore the lost cell and maintain a proper balance of cells within the brain.

OPCs eventually can mature to become support cells known as

In a span of 24 hours after the initial injury, the cells detect it, and move to the site. Graph b shows the accumulation of the cell within the injury site over a 24-hour time span. Grid c demonstrates the consecutive movement of an OPC to the laser injury in a time of 10 hours. Graph d shows the expansion and backtracking of leading and lagging processes of the cells proportionate to the injury site. Grid e uses different colors to show a collection of three images of one OPC as it moved towards the wound (yellow) in a span of 21 days. The vector plots in f demonstrate how OPC redirect themselves relative to the injury site 3 weeks after induction. The vector sum is the sum of all displacements. Grid g is the signal strength projection of OPC cells above and below the laser injury (yellow) 2 days after induction. The green arrows point out the OPCs (orange) that are sitting adjacent to the injury. Graph h is a combined plot showing the number of OPCs multiplying (yellow) and dying (red) over 2 weeks while total OPC density within the wound is measured by the blue line (injury introduced after week

To study and quantify the RPE wound healing in response to an acute or chronic wounding condition, we introduced one electrical treatment every day for ten days and measured the time for cells to regain 10% and 90% of the maximum impedance for each treatment. As illustrated in Fig. 1A, time for cells to reach 10% maximum can indicate the point where cells start to heal the wound; the period for cells to reach 10% and 90% maximum can represent the rate for cells to repair the wound. After the first treatment (an acute condition), bystander cells took average 7.7 hours to reach 10% maximum impedance and another average 12.2 hours to reach 90% maximum impedance. The duration for cells to recover gradually decreased with the daily treatment (Fig.…

His knowledge and comprehension of his role as well as his eagerness to always do more inspired me. Kyle’s professionalism and confidence led him to be a favorite among several patients; he was able to diagnose with confidence; and was able to communicate with the patients in a way that they would be able to understand. Kyle was always an advocate for MCPHS and as I continued to work with him I was able to see, not only his passion, but the knowledge he gleaned from his time at MCPHS. I knew that MCPHS was not only a school that prepared their students well for the workplace, but also teaches them in a manner where patient education and…

As of today I continue to be an EOP freshman who is the first from my family to attend college and the first to be on the right path of obtaining a bachelor’s degree. To be honest, I am proud to be an EOP student at CSUN not because they give me a small amount of money but because I like the idea of knowing that I am representing the impossible. As you know, people like me are not meant to go to college or even finish high school. Those basic assumptions are made based on our families’ social class or ethnicity. I know we all come from low income families that know nothing about college and who’s kids only grow up to learn that they must start working to help their families economically.…

One way, is by a stem cell transplant, which turns the unspecialized embryonic stem cells into specialized adult cells. This can be used to replace any neurons damaged by spinal cord injuries, strokes, Alzheimer’s disease, and Parkinson’s disease. Also stem cells can be used to produce insulin, which can treat people with diabetes as well as can produce heart muscle cells that can repair damage done after a heart attack. For spinal cord injuries, scientists have been working on recolonizing stem cells to the spinal cord in order to improve victim’s ability to move and feel. They have been experimenting with grafts of neural stem/ progenitor cells from marmoset monkeys, for they have similar nervous systems to human, and after taking embryonic stem cells and putting them into adult marmosets who suffered from bruised spinal cords they showed significant recovery of motor functions.…
