Opiate and Benzodiazepine Substance Abuse Teaching Plan Introduction Prescription drug abuse is a devastating problem for some people from different types of backgrounds. It is an epidemic that has been labeled as the nation’s fastest growing drug problem and deaths from overdose surpass those of homicides, gunshots, and suicides (Felicilda- Reynaldo, 2015) Prescription drug abuse is the misuse and abuse of prescribed medications not used for medical purposes with intentions of getting high off the drug. These medication are typically abused in combination with other illicit drugs, alcohol, and over the counter drugs which in turns makes the person at a high risk for overdose and death. There are several risk factors that can cause a person to become addicted which include family dynamics, addictive personalities, peer and relationship pressure, depression/anxiety, physical chronic pain from an existing medical condition, environmental and socioeconomic status, and mental health problems (Schub & Walsh, 2015). The purpose of this teaching plan is to educate the risks and dangers of substance abuse to young adults ages eighteen through forty, using the cognitive learning theory and the health promotion model that are in the piaget’s formal operation stage and in the intimacy versus isolation of the psychosocial developmental stages. It takes into consideration the different cognitive factors that can predict the success of the learner during the teaching (Bastable, 2014). Both the health promotion model and the cognitive learning theory encourage the active participation of the learner and family in a organized structured setting with goals and expectations with support of their loved ones (Bastable, 2014). This is especially useful for the young adult in the intimacy versus isolation as it gives the opportunity to the learner to have the support from their partner or family that can give them that extra boost of motivation to go forward with their teaching plan. Conclusion The purpose of this teaching plan is to educate young adults ages eighteen to forty years old about the risks of substance abuse of opiates and benzodiazepines, the effects on the body these drugs do, and coping mechanisms for the prevention or aftermath of substance abuse. Young adults can be easily influenced by friends, boyfriend/girlfriends, or family members
