In Shakespeare’s Hamlet, he leads people to question if Hamlet’s madness was real or fake. Shakespeare brought about the madness of two characters, Hamlet and Ophelia, in which, Hamlet was the cause of Ophelia’s. Hamlet was the protagonist of the play and everybody was focused on him. Shakespeare also offers clear evidence to Hamlet’s insanity, while the madness of others was uncertain.
In the beginning of the play, Hamlet has lost his father, who was King, and watched his mother marry his uncle within two months. With that being said, Hamlet has lost his spot as next in line for the throne and also found out that his mother and uncle were incestuous creatures. Hamlet then started seeing the ghost of his dead father. The ghost of his father told him that Claudius, his uncle, poisoned him while he was sleeping. He wanted Hamlet to seek revenge for him. Hamlet was now seeing and speaking to ghost. Every since his encounter with the ghost of his father, Hamlet was acting different. I believe Hamlet had a psychotic disorder such as schizophrenia, which means he had trouble staying in touch with reality and unable to meet the ordinary demands of life. Some symptoms of this disorder are hallucinations, extremely disorganized behavior, and suicidal thoughts. Hamlet experienced all three symptoms. In this article, I chose to write about how his madness was real. Any person put in Hamlet’s situation would not be stable. Shakespeare gave many reasons why Hamlet went insane and they were pretty obvious. Hamlet’s insanity was so toxic to where he drove Ophelia insane, who later drowned in a brook because she fell from a tree. Hamlet and Ophelia both lost their fathers, which played a major part in the both of them going insane.
