Ophelia has died and is being buried, this is where Hamlet finally admits to loving her, however, this leads to a conflict between Laertes and Hamlet. Laertes and Hamlet fence with the King’s unwritten idea of ‘to the death’ do to poison in the goblet and on the fencing foil. Laertes is stuck by the poisoned blade tip and so has Hamlet, they are able to exchange words of peace before Laertes dies. Gertrude drinks from the gauntlet and too dies, aiding in Hamlet’s acceptance in that she can no longer bring disappointment to him. Though Hamlet knows he is dying, he is able to poison Claudius and kill him, thus avenging his father. The last loose end that Hamlet has to tie up before he can peacefully die and accept his father’s unfair death is that someone must take his father’s place on the throne. With his last few breaths, he tells his only true friend (and survivor) Horacio; “on Fortinbras: he has my dying voice; so tell him, with the occurrents, more and less, which have solicited. The rest is silence” (Act V scene ii 338-340). At this time Hamlet is able to come to peace with the idea of someone else taking the place of his father on the throne and can now fully accept his father’s death, complete his grieving, and die without loose ends like his father…

Ophelia is suddenly shut out of Hamlet’s life in the worst way possible without any consideration of how she would feel. In act three, scene two, as Hamlet and his family and friends prepare to watch a play, he decides to sit next to Ophelia and flirt with her. The conversation between Hamlet and Ophelia is simple and lustful. Hamlet’s previous behavior towards Ophelia is never acknowledged by him. This shows that Ophelia is expected as a woman to oppress her feelings and behave the way she was expected to by being submissive. After the death of Polonius, Ophelia’s flood of emotions could no longer be contained. She truly had no one to turn to for support. Out of anger and frustration, Ophelia’s mind soon cracks into madness. In act four, scene five, Ophelia uses flowers to throw them at everyone around her. Claudius and Laertes suspects that since Ophelia is a pretty woman,[who is in there eye’s delicate,] is just too weak to handle anything. Ophelia even warns the King and Queen about her feelings of attempting suicide by saying, “but I cannot choose but weep to think they would lay him i’ the cold ground” (V. vi. 65). Society only views Ophelia as just another grieving weak woman. When in reality, Ophelia is driven mad from unrealistic expectations of a woman in a male-dominated world. After Ophelia’s death, Laertes weeps for his dead sister by saying, “When these are gone, / The woman will be…

Claudius has only done things the wrong way. He has tried to make hamlet his son while at the same time, trying to eliminate him. Claudius scolds at Rosencrantz and Guildenstern and tells them “You can’t put your heads together and figure out why he’s acting so dazed and confused, ruining his peace and quiet with such dangers of display” (170; Act 3). In reality he does not care about Hamlet he could care less how he feels or what happens to him. Gertrude has gotten out of hand by supporting Claudius in everything he does. After the play she defends her beloved Claudius by telling Hamlet “Hamlet, thou hast thy father much offended” (184; Act 3). She does not stop and think how Hamlet may feel and why he is actually doing all of this. Hamlet, therefore, feels alone and is left abandoned to face all these problems alone. The one whom should take full responsibility is Claudius. He is the one who has provided all the pressure and has brought all theses issues upon Hamlet. It is his fault that Hamlet has acted irrationally and accidentally killed Polonius. Another thing that can be seen, is that Ophelia, daughter of Polonius, is the love of Hamlets life. He would not dare do such a thing knowing how distraught Ophelia would be. In the end she becomes crazy by the death of her father. She ends her own life because of Hamlets actions. Having been dead for two months, the ghost of King Hamlet visits his son and reveals the truth behind his death. Following this, the ghost gives Hamlet instructions to avenge his death, saying: “Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder” (I.v.29). Not only does Hamlet discover in this moment that his father was murdered, but the ghost instructs that he must also retaliate against King Claudius, the murderer. This point early in the play causes Hamlet to become consumed with the desire for revenge and therefore sets off a series of events that end in a sizable amount of collateral damage. Because of Hamlet’s paranoia and desire to kill King Claudius, he acts with irrationality. For instance, when Hamlet is in a meeting with his mother in her bedroom, his insanity drives him to stab who he thinks is King Claudius but actually is Polonius. This sets Laertes off on his own burst of revenge and sends Ophelia into a madness that kills her in the end. If it was not for this incident, Laertes would not have returned from England and conspired with King Claudius to kill Hamlet, therefore eliminating the crisis that ended in multiple deaths. After Hamlet’s return from Claudius’s attempt to exile him, Hamlet reveals the fates of his friends Rosencrantz and…

The death of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern becomes inevitable when Hamlet realizes that they are working for Claudius. Hamlet expresses his opinion of the two when he declares, “Ay, Sir, that soaks up the King’s countenance, his rewards, his authorities. But such officers do the King best service in the end. He keeps them like [an ape] an apple in the corner of his jaw, first mouthed, to be last swallowed. When he needs what you have gleaned, it is but squeezing you, and, sponge, you shall be dry again,” (Shakespeare 4.2. 15-21). Hamlet’s once dear friends have now turned on him and lie to and deceit Hamlet in order to get information from him. When Claudius assigns the two to take Hamlet to England, Hamlet, still seeking revenge, manipulates the plan. Hamlet changes the letters asking England to execute Rosencrantz and Guildenstern instead of Hamlet. He has become so involved and obsessed with the idea of killing Claudius that he willingly gets his close friends killed because they chose Claudius over him. After Laertes learns of Hamlet’s impulsive murder of his father, he mirrors the desire to avenge his own father’s death. Laertes wanting revenge initiates Claudius’ plan which ends up killing many of the characters. “I am lost in it, my lord. But let him come. It warms the very sickness in my heart That I [shall] live and tell him to his teeth ‘Thus didst thou,’” (Shakespeare…

Coupled with the idea that Hamlet has gone mad as well and his and Laertes departure from Denmark, Ophelia has lost all males figures in her life, and thus; her sanity. Ophelia’s relationship with Hamlet can be one of the causes to her madness. Although Hamlet is seen to trample upon Ophelia’s feelings, seen when he pleads for ophelia to “get thee to a nunnery” (III, i, 123), the severity of the wounds he inflicts to Ophelia is because Hamlet “loved Ophelia” (V, i, 255). Because of the love the two have for each other, the words that Hamlet spews at Ophelia are like daggers dipped with the most vile poisons. Ophelia is unable to come to terms with her situation and is consumed by her lunacy. Ophelia’s lunacy drives her to suicide, as Ophelia is unable to live a life where the supposed love of her life goes mad and murders her father, then abandons her. Hamlet Anti Hero Analysis

Hamlet originally planned the murder against Claudius, but impulsively executed Polonius first. However, when he realized he had killed Polonius, Hamlet felt no sorrow for his death (despite committing murder in the presence of his mother). “Thou wretched rash, intruding fool. Farewell, I took thee for thy better” acknowledges Hamlet after stabbing Polonius unknowingly behind the curtain. Instead of an ordinary hero seeking justice, Hamlet wanted Claudius suffering for his sins and felt no guilt for Polonius’ death, insulting and blaming him for his death due to his intrusion on Gertrude. This is one example of Hamlet’s apathy, as he feels unaffected from the monstrous act. Hamlet’s apathy continued to motivate his furious revenge of his father; he desired vengeance despite the consequences. Hamlet’s indecisiveness is one of his human flaws where he seduced Ophelia with poetry before contradicting himself by telling her to go to a nunnery, eventually insinuating her suicide directly and indirectly through murdering Polonius. Hamlet revealed his over-confidence and apathetic personality when he compared who had loved Ophelia most, the brother or the lover. “Forty thousand brothers could not with all their quantity of love make up my sum” admits Hamlet as he believed he loved Ophelia more than her brother. Hamlet 's…

Hamlet is willing to hurt Ophelia and give up his relationship with her in order to keep up his façade. When Hamlet initially leaves Ophelia, she comes crying to her father saying Hamlet came into her room in a crazed mess, “thrice his head thus waving up and down… [and] Let’s [her] go”(2.1.93-97). Hamlet leaves Ophelia in such a way because he knows that Polonius will relay the message to the King and Queen. Hamlet loves Ophelia, by letting her go, Hamlet knows he is sacrificing a relationship with the woman he loves in order to appear mad. Hamlet also knows that Ophelia loves him very much, and that by leaving her without so much as an explanation that he will destroy her, yet he is still willing to hurt Ophelia and lets her go only so his madman act is more believable and so that Polonius and his parents become aware of his display of methodical madness. While Hamlet is willing to hurt and push away his loved ones in order to perfect his insane act, Claudius is willing to go to much more dangerous and morbid lengths to preserve his great image and create a flawless façade. To make sure Hamlet will not expose the real him, Claudius is prepared to plan Hamlets own murder. After Claudius confirms that Hamlet knows of the murder and is a threat to his “good guy act”, he tells Hamlet he is set for England, and later reveals his letter to the King of England which says that he must help him with ‘”the present death of Hamlet, for like the hectic in [Claudius’] blood, he rages” (4.3.65-66). Claudius is willing to do whatever it may take to tie up his loose ends and perfect his image, all to hide his true self. There is no limit to what Claudius’ will do to remain hidden and prefect his façade, not even the murder of his step son/nephew. Both men are willing to go to extreme lengths in order to hide their true…
