Operation Smile was founded in 1982, by Dr. William P. Magee and his wife Kathleen following a medical aid trip to the Philippines where they along with a team of physicians planned to perform surgeries to repair the cleft lips and cleft palates of children who were in need of surgery (Operation Smile, n.d.). “In Naga City, approximately 300 families arrived hoping their children would receive surgery, but the team could only treat 40 children” (Operation Smile, n.d., para.2).
