On the 25th of October I attended Canterbury crown court. The proceeding I observed was a sentencing and named ‘Operation Hailstone’. I will firstly make an overall summary of what happened and then reflect and analyse on my experience by highlighting what surprised me, what didn’t, what I learnt and what the whole experience has done for me. The Americans and South Vietnamese were completely caught off guard by the organized 80,000 Viet Cong soldiers attacking due to the focus of guerrilla warfare instead of conventional attacks. The leaders of the North Vietnamese Liberation force hoped it would be a stunning victory and cause the war to abruptly end. For me, question one and two have many of the same answers. I look at the Vietnam War as a byproduct of the Cold War. American policy makers were so afraid of communism spreading across the Asian continent, (the domino effect) that they were willing to do anything and everything to stop communism from taking root in Southeast Asia. The French had been unsuccessful in their attempt to drive communism from Vietnam and American leaders felt that it was the "duty" of America, as the policemen of the world, to step in and stop the communists from further advances. As far as US ground troops going to Vietnam in 1965, Johnson used the Gulf of Tonkin incident as justification for commuting combat troops to fight the North Vietnamese.…
