Operation Overlord The year was 1944. Allied Soviet forces held a strong front across East Germany in a stalemate. What the Allies needed more than ever was an attack of the western front. This War had no problem taking casualties, and no other battle was more deadly nor significant than was yet to come. Enter: Operation Overlord. By this time, Adolf Hitler has held control of France for many months (Meacham). With the loss of this Allied power, the Allies needed to plan and execute a counter attack to help them control the war. The final plan was devised by none other than Winston Churchill and Dwight D.
