Having test subjects perform potentially damaging experiments on other test subjects is immoral and unethical. How would you feel if in this class we ran unexplained, undetailed experiments on each student in the class for a grade and to test how obedient each student is? In Opening Skinner’s Box: Obscura, such an experiment takes place where you were forced into a corner. Mentally you were cornered and had no choice but to cooperate with the experiment. For only four dollars you torture a stranger for an hour all in the name of science. The guy says he has a heart condition but the guy wearing the lab coat tells you that you have to keep going and finish the experiment. The stranger is screaming begging you to stop and now you are crying because you want to stop but you’re told that the experiment requires you to keep going(Slater, pg.35). You believed that since you signed up for this experiment that you had to follow through with it even though you felt deep down inside that it was not right. What if experiments such as these took place in our class, where we would be used to conduct experiments on each other. some experiments that force us to abandon our beliefs for the sake of science. Exploiting a person’s weakness even for a moment just to run an experiment is unethical. In some cases these experiments could critically damage a person mentally or physical. A person who feels pressured to do something can be unpredictable.
