The semi structured interview was conducted with the clear goal of obtaining information on my proposed PhD research landscape. Unlike the open ended interview, the approach in semi structured interview was less narrative. Questions for this interview was direct with less elaborate narration. I approached the interviewee over email and discussed about the proposed interview. I explained to him the purpose of the interview and gave him an outline of the topics on which the interview questions are based on. Upon getting the email confirmation from the interviewee I finalized the date and venue of the interview. From my previous open ended interview which was held in a coffee shop, I assumed it is much better to have the interview …show more content…
Having worked in the same sector and same development landscape I couldn’t agree with the interviewee on many instances. However, during the interview I did not contest his ideas or views. I still wonder if I am allowed to contradict or I should just continue with the interview agreeing to disagree. Another challenge for this interview was my inability to stop the interviewee from often going out of the questions boundaries. Even though after meandering with answers beyond the boundaries he would come back giving emphasis to the required answer. The whole meandering was very time consuming, this at times stressed me. I started at times having parallel thoughts on how I am going to bring him back to focus. In four or five situations I did manage to bring him back to focus by mentioning in the questions in the following fashion “if you are to focus very much on this context what are three probable practices you would identify?” I believe was a subtle way of requesting the interviewee to be more specific with answers. However, there were other instances where I let him meander because the constant reminder of being specific or redirecting to the focus would be disrespectful. Given that the interviewee is giving a substantial portion of time in middle of his busy schedule, I did not want to sound rude. These phases of my interview often left me
