As William Shakespeare once said, “How far that little candle throws his beams! So shine a good deed in a naughty world.” I agree with Shakespeare even the littlest of work, makes a big difference. You could volunteer, pick up trash, or vene help out the new kid at school. As I said before even the littlest things can have a big impact.…
Mark Twain once said “the two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why” (Twain, ND). I found out why when I was 19, pregnant and homeless living on the streets of New York City. I knew I had a purposed and that there had to be something more to life than the cards I was given. I believe change starts with one and that is why I decided that it will be my life’s mission to help end homelessness and be a service to other people.…

Although addressing homelessness is still challenging in some regions of Canada, the federal government of Canada has initiated programs to help the homeless in previous years. In 1999, Canada’s government launched the National Homeless Initiative (NHI) with an investment of $753 million for three years to help support communities struggling with homelessness. The NHI’s objectives were to reduce homelessness in canada, facilitate the unsheltered, improve the quality and diversity of resources, and increase awareness and understanding of homelessness. The initial success led to the NHI’s renewal in 2004 with a $405 million investment for another three years after an evaluation in 2003. Through this second phase of the NHI, several more policies, programs, and funds were established based on the previous objectives.…
I would spend my one million dollars in three very distinct and controversial ways. I would portion the money out to be donated to three different causes. My number one cause is factory jobs going to other countries, which is going to receive six hundred thousand. Second, homelessness would be nonexistent due to people having more jobs and my donation of three hundred thousand. Lastly, the income gap between the rich and poor would be substantially lower and the middle class population would increase dramatically due to more job opportunities in the United States of America and the final donation of my million dollars of one thousand dollars.…
Homelessness from a Social Lens Homelessness is a growing concern in the United States, as 7-12 million adults have been homeless at some point in their lives (Markos, Lima, Homelessness). An important question that has been presented is, why should the government adopt financial aid as a solution to homelessness in American cities? This is a very crucial question to think about, as homelessness continues to grow everyday. Overall, it is shown that once people become homeless it is nearly impossible for them to return to their previous lives. From a social lens, adopting financial aid will change the way that all groups of society are affected by homelessness.…
I understand that people looking for a better life come to our country because they believe that our country will provide better opportunities for them and their families. This can be a burden on our government and takes a lot of weight on their shoulders of handling the newcomers. I can’t imagine not receiving healthcare because of my age or health history or not having food to eat, a house to live in or public education. However I do believe we should step back and look at our problems here. We have many homeless people, starving children, disabled veterans, etc.…
Homelessness in the United States of America is a real issue. According to the November 2015 National Homeless Report (AHAR) to Congress the numbers of homeless in America are staggering numbers. There are estimated 564,706 persons homeless every night. Additionally, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the homeless are more susceptible to infectious diseases, chronic illness, mental health issues, substance abuse and violence. Even more alarming is the mortality rate for the homeless, which is four to nine times higher when compared to those persons that are not homeless.…
The rise of homelessness in America rises thirty-two percent as more families are getting thrown out of their homes and entering homeless shelters(nipped). Homelessness is not a temporary problem that policymakers can solve with just a piece of paper. Even with…
Introduction There are a multitude of risk factors that increase one’s likelihood of becoming homeless. To begin, homelessness is more common in males, Caucasian or African American people, those lacking Medicaid insurance, and has a higher population in large cities (Folsom, Hawthorne, Lindamer, Gilmer, Baily, Goshan, Garcia, Unützer, Hough & Jeste, 2005). However, there is a risk factor that impacts homelessness greater than anything stated above, and that is mental illness.…
At a time when Americans are dealing with rising food and fuel prices, slowing jobs and soaring home foreclosures, is it really possible that homelessness is on the decline? Perhaps, but it depends on your meaning of the word homeless. (Thornburgh) Everyone has experience the homeless either if it was walking pass and seeing them laying on the ground or begging for money or maybe driving pass them and seeing them holding up signs or holding out cups asking for any spare change. Homelessness is not just strictly an absolute lack of shelter but rather an extreme form of poverty characterized by instability of housing and inadequacy of income. Some people may have limited sensitivity to, and understanding of the issues of homeless because “Getting…
government's ultimate goal to initiate a program or facilitate a plan of action to keep the homeless of the streets and in housing has ultimately failed countless times to actually help homeless people. A recent example of this was for homeless veterans, the Obama administration “proudly declared the glass half full… [reducing] the number of homeless vets to 47%.” Yet his statement was belittled from his accusations made in his early presidency. The shrunken ambition made by Eric Shinseki, a V.A. in the program, had “ [announced a promise] to end veteran homelessness by 2014. (NYT Editorial Board)…
They identify policies as a key factor when addressing homelessness; they state that “Workable and effective policies addressing homelessness need to be based on a clear definition of homelessness.” They go on to state that “older outdated policies only address minimal issues of homelessness and failing to recognize the dynamics involved will result in less effectiveness. “Good practice” policy incorporates changing how homelessness is seen and by addressing the housing psychological and social needs of the homeless, as well as integrating across programs and increasing independence through capacity building.” Another key factor related to the homeless issue is inequality among residents. Greene, S., Pendall, R., Scott, M., & Lei, S. (2016) argue that “cities drive economic growth in high-income countries, creating hubs of innovation and generating an outsized share of national wealth.”…
