After reviewing the DBQ, it is apparent that the Muslim and Christian responses to the devastations of the Black Death differed. In particular, the Christian response involved blaming the Jewish population for the horrors of the plague. In contrast, Muslims did not blame other ethnic groups for the plague and, instead, accepted it as the will of God. While both cultures were overcome by the ravages of the Black Death, it is interesting to note the stoic acceptance of the plague demonstrated by the Muslims as contrasted with the guilt-ridden manner in which Christians lamented their fate. It is interesting that the long-suffering Jews were once again the focus of persecution by the Christians.…

Many Christians today are martyrs and are bravely dying for the faith they have. According to IJ Review, “First, the Christians are forced to their knees, then the spokesperson for the terrorists holds up his knife…” (Charters). Although Christians are not being put in death camps, they are still facing religious persecution worldwide. Faith is really hard to maintain in this day and age as persecution increases more and more.…

Ayn Rand’s Anthem gives the readers a look at a dystopian society in which individualism is forgotten and man’s only priority is to serve the greater good. The most common singular pronoun, “I”, is deemed unspeakable as it is thought of as self-centered and egocentric. The Council of Vocations controls all citizens’ lives, determining what they can and cannot do and laying out the rules for society. Rand’s Anthem depicts collectivism and communism, which have been ideas present throughout History. Germany, from 1933-1945, had a similar social structure to the one presented in Anthem, with the government carrying total power and control over the citizens and laying out the rules for society.…

Throughout feudal and medieval Europe, society was stricken with anti-semitic and misogynistic events. Both Jews and females suffered during this time, where scapegoating occurred regularly. Jews filled the role of scapegoats through being blamed for the killing of Christ, killing Christians and performing heretic-like acts. As a result, they have faced the brunt of European brutality, in events such as the First Crusade, Black Death, and Spanish Inquisition. As well, females were seen as inferior, gross, and in many cases witches.…

Though society has made much progress in recent years, it is not completely without problems. One of these problems is bias- defined by Merriam-Webster as an inclination of temperament or outlook; especially a personal and sometimes unreasoned judgment. Bias ties directly into the problem of bigotry, the devotion to one's own opinions and prejudices. Bias and bigotry can both be incredibly harmful, in the sense of physical violence and mental abuse. Hate crimes have been around as long as bigotry and bias, through many different forms.…

Hate crimes are something that are carried out on a daily basis, and have been all throughout our history, even though the term “hate crime” was not established until the 1980s (The Federal Bureau of Investigation). Historically this has included bias crimes against Blacks, Jews, Native Americans and essentially every new immigrant group that has entered the United States in mass numbers. It is something that has no boarders and is happening all over the world. Hate crimes, are “acts of bigotry directed towards marginalized and vulnerable communities [which] are part of our historical fabric, rooted in the widespread and often culturally accepted demonization of the Other…”(Chakraborti 2010: 1). These acts can target or be motivated by an individual’s…

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s announcement of a planned missile strike on Guam has sparked fear among a lot of people, but the Christians in the Pacific island are unfazed and instead choose to respond to the threat with prayer. The newspapers today show the Syrian people being persecuted, which means subject to hostility and ill-treatment, especially because of their race or political or religious beliefs. Unfortunately, today different groups of people have been persecuted for a long time like the Jews. The Nazis who came into power in 1993, believed that Germans were racially superior and that the Jews were inferior, and a threat to the German racial community. This would lead to the Holocaust. In Maycomb County, there is persecution as demonstrated by the criticism of Atticus Finch and the treatment of Dolphus Raymond.…
